He founded and is a trustee of the Institute for Public Policy Research, was a member of the Commission on Public Policy and British Business and is a director of Britain in Europe. He has been a special advisor to the President of the Board of Trade and to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, and an advisor to successive leaders of the Labour Party. He is married with three daughters.
