Purpose and benefitsIf our teams are to function properly, there must be no ambiguity in our communication. Teams depend on the communication of the vision, mission, or purpose, the specific goals that need to be met, and the roles and responsibilities that need to be allocated. The team’s activities are kept on track by continual review, evaluation, and feedback. When we communicate, we are not merely transmitters, but receivers. Although it may be subconscious—and for some, it is more subconscious than for others!—we are constantly receiving signals that we have been heard and understood. Communication, therefore, is a two-way process that challenges our ability to articulate a compelling message and our ability to observe the responses we get. We need to be alive to our effectiveness in order to adjust and tailor our messages so that they have the best chance of being heard. |
