Delegating Upwards by
            Bloomsbury

Purpose and benefits

Good delegation is an art, whether it travels up or down the business. It oils the wheels of industry and ensures that tasks are performed efficiently. Delegation also ensures that employees learn new skills and grow in their professional fields. Poor delegation can reduce motivation and make people feel as if they have been exploited, while no delegation at all can cause bottlenecks and prevent organisational growth.

Generally speaking, delegation moves down the business from the executives’ strategic objectives until all the necessary tasks have been achieved. However, it is sometimes necessary for employees to reverse the flow and delegate upwards. Cases for this reversal include the need for capital or human resources, the need for a specific skill or expert knowledge, or the need to overcome political barriers. As an employee, you may also find that on some occasions you need to “borrow” power to resolve a situation that has run into the buffers. Sometimes, though, you will simply have too much to do and need some immediate assistance.
