Purpose and benefitsAnger is an emotional reaction to a threat, whether “real” or perceived. When it is triggered, it often results in a sudden outburst of energy that is directed against the person or thing that caused it—or something that symbolises the person or thing that caused it! Because anger is a reactive emotion, it is sometimes expressed before we’ve had a chance to control it. This makes it very uncomfortable for any witnesses, not to mention the person who caused it, because they don’t know how extreme it is going to get or whether they are going to be in the firing line. If anger is not expressed, it can turn inward and seep out as passive/aggressive behaviour. This is the behaviour of the “quiet saboteur” and it is difficult to manage because it is hidden, furtive, and often denied. |
