Purpose and benefitsEffective teams are at the heart of all successful organisations, but it is only in the past five years that our understanding of what a team is has changed. Traditionally, teams tackled projects that brought them together regularly in one place so that strategy, progress, and (ultimately) success could be monitored. The vast technological advances of the late 20th and early 21st centuries have meant that virtual teams—based often in different countries, if not differently time zones—can tap into the Internet and other communications tools to work together on projects with a global reach. Clearly, the dynamic in a virtual (or dispersed) team will be radically different from the norm, and if you’re managing one, you’ll need to find new ways to help the team bond and cohere. Many of the principles of team leadership are still valid, however, and there are plenty of ways you can make your team harness its strength and capabilities. |
