Purpose and benefits

The obvious reason for reading a work of futurology more than 20 years after its publication is to see if the futurologist got it right. In many respects Toffler did. But there is a danger there also. Toffler predicted the electronic office and its effects. Now that most people work in electronic offices and live with their effects, perhaps it seems redundant to read a book simply in order to be able to congratulate the author on his foresight. What is startling about "The Third Wave" is that it was written so recently, and yet the technological leaps made since its publication have been so immense. The intriguing thing now is whether the author’s broader analysis encompassed the developments that flowed from the developments he immediately foresaw. For many people Toffler’s ideas are still intriguing.
