Purpose and benefits

W. Edwards Deming had a profound effect on the management of quality. His influence was first felt in Japan, where his thinking played a key role in the rebuilding of Japanese industry after the second world war, and only later in the West. He stressed that organisations need to manage for quality, that it requires a focus on the customer, and that it is something that you work at—a learning process. His famous ‘Fourteen Points’ have become the commandments of the quality movement.
