Purpose and benefitsPeter Senge made a major contribution to the concept of the learning organisation. The concept grew out of his study of how firms and other organisations can develop adaptive capabilities in a world of increasing complexity and rapid change. His book "The Fifth Discipline" was intended to give managers the tools and conceptual archetypes to help them understand the structures and dynamics underlying their organisations’ problems. So far, however, though the concept was enthusiastically received by many and hotly debated in the 1990s, there are few signs that Senge’s idealistic vision has been translated into reality in many instances. |
