Purpose and benefitsTownsend’s genius lies in satirising the modern organisation for its excess, stupidity and absurdity. He has no time for the adornments of executive office, and scant respect for many of the people who hold it. He sees the system not only as lying like a dead hand on the people who operate inside it, but also being counterproductive to the aims for which it was set up. Like all satire, however, Townsend’s is inspired by a vision of what could or ought to be. In his case it is the same humane and empowering corporate environment that many of his ‘serious’ colleagues have advocated. |
