That Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919) has made it into this select group of 100 top businessmen is testimony to his impact on the commercial revolution that took place in the United States as the 19th century gave way to the 20th. Carnegie was arguably the first, and certainly one of the most successful, of a generation of businessmen who pioneered industrial growth in the United States and throughout the world on the back of steel manufacturing and the building of railways. He was born in Scotland, the son of a poor handloom weaver. At the end of his long and prosperous career he had built the largest steel company in the United States and amassed a vast personal fortune.
