Thomas J Watson Sr graduated from hawking pianos by horse and cart to selling the latest technology—the cash register—at NCR. At Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co, the company that eventually became IBM, he engineered a corporate transformation, pumping money into research and development, nurturing exciting new technologies, and galvanising the sales force. By the time of his death in 1956, revenues had grown from $4 m to over $1 billion.
