Purpose and benefits

The cost of claims being brought by employees against their employers is rising. In the United Kingdom there were more than 100,000 applications to employment tribunals in 2001, the number of cases having risen by 135% over the past 10 years. Unfair dismissal accounted for nearly 50% of these claims; breach of contract or pay-related claims accounted for around 35%, and discrimination on the grounds of sex, race or disability accounted for about 8%.
