Previously he was chief executive and subsequently chairman of Cadbury Schweppes, where he spent his career. He is deputy chairman of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and was previously chairman of the CBI Education Committee. He has recently been appointed chancellor of Birmingham University. He is married with three children.
