Purpose and benefitsMany of us are under such pressure that we are tempted to solve problems based on what we know has worked before. However, this linear approach cuts out the possibility of finding more creative and effective solutions. We tend to look for “quick fixes”; approaches that will reduce the amount of time we have to spend on thinking through a situation from first principles. If we do this habitually, we will find ourselves going round the same circle over and over again and nothing will change for the better. By opting for a short-term solution, there is a high chance of the problem re-emerging and distracting our attention yet again. By taking time to look at a problem from different perspectives, we not only give ourselves the opportunity to solve it creatively but also to find the “once and for all” solution. Indeed, we may be able to find elegant and inventive solutions that help us move beyond the perpetual demand on our time, reduce the pressure that we are under, and increase our productivity. If we do not put the effort in, we are likely to get stuck in a rut and become bored by our habitual responses. Re-evaluating a problem and gaining fresh ideas brings new energy to the workplace that can result in a greater sense of contribution and satisfaction—and it may bring to the surface some important issues that have previously been missed. |
