Purpose and benefitsIn the recent past, international careers were reserved for the stars of an organisation. This might be an elite performer, in line for an exotic posting as a reward for a job well done; or an aggressive ‘closer’, known for successfully developing important business in vital geographic locations; or an elegant, diplomat-type personality, assigned to a sensitive project abroad to smooth over feelings or gently open opportunities for future development. Today, however, international experience is almost a necessity for ambitious career builders. Almost all organisations of any significant size consider themselves to be playing in the international arena—and even if they are not, they’re well aware that their competitors are. So are their important customers. Consequently, having international experience on your CV is a big help on your way up the career ladder. |
