Purpose and benefitsAmericans share many of the nomadic traits of some of their Old World cousins. Yet, these New World pioneers, in particular, have long been regarded as people on the move. Even Alexis de Tocqueville noted in 1831, ‘ … the American has no time to tie himself to anything, he grows accustomed only to change…regarding it as the natural state of man’. With my original training in the field of American civilisation and my extensive exposure to history, government, and literature, I have been able to draw from a wealth of resources over the years, like de Tocqueville, whose work, "Democracy in America" , is a brilliant study of the American culture. |
