Purpose and benefitsChandler was a historian whose first achievement was to found the subject area of business history almost single-handedly. In addition, through investigating the corporate past, he was able to draw conclusions relevant to the corporate present and future. His work focused particularly on the relationship between strategy and structure and the development of the multi-divisional corporation. His main conclusions were that strategy comes before structure, that organisational structures are driven by the changing demands and pressures of the marketplace, and that market-driven organisations favour a loosely coupled divisional structure. He also made a significant contribution to 20th-century writing on the role of the manager and the theory of management. |
