Purpose and benefitsWilliam Crapo Durant (1861–1947) was one of the most fascinating characters in the history of the automobile industry. Not long out of school, Durant went to work for the Flint City Waterworks and ended up saving it from financial ruin. He made a million-dollar fortune in his thirties and took control of the year-old Buick Motor Company in 1905. He formed General Motors in 1908, lost control in 1910, founded the Chevrolet Motor Company in 1911, and regained control of General Motors in 1917 but by 1920 he had been ousted once more. He set up Durant Motors in 1921, lost control following the Wall Street crash, and was declared personally bankrupt in 1936. In all, it was an extraordinary career befitting an extraordinary man. |
