The man behind Oracle, Larry Ellison (1944–), was responsible for his company’s transformation from a small software company in the 1970s to what is now a new-economy, Net-centric powerhouse. Raised on Chicago’s South Side, Ellison was a self-taught computer programmer. Travelling out West, he struck the software equivalent of gold when he developed the Oracle database program.
