Purpose and benefits

Harold Geneen is the classic example of the CEO as analyst. He joined the board of ITT in 1959 and set about turning the company into the world’s greatest conglomerate. His basic organisational strategy was that diversification was a source of strength. Under Geneen, ITT’s spending spree amounted to 350 companies and included Avis Rent-A-Car, Sheraton Hotels, Continental Baking, and Levitt & Sons, among many others. By 1970, ITT was composed of 400 separate companies operating in 70 countries.
