Purpose and benefitsHarvey-Jones [1924] enjoyed three careers. In 1941 he entered service in the Royal Navy, serving in the second world war. He continued in navy intelligence and left in 1959 after a distinguished career. He followed the trials of war with the tribulations of commerce. Rising through the ranks at the chemical and pharmaceutical conglomerate Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), he became the first nonchemist to be named chairman. As chairman, the flamboyant Harvey-Jones needed all his instincts for survival to keep the company afloat. In 1987 he retired as ICI’s chairman following one of the great turnarounds of British corporate history. He left to pursue a third career in the media, passing his considerable knowledge on to other business people through his television show Troubleshooter. |
