Honda, Soichiro

Bloomsbury

Purpose and benefits

Soichiro Honda was no respecter of convention. He started in business as a car mechanic and then, bypassing the time-honoured Japanese networking system or gakubatsa, he made his own way in business with no help from cronies. The Honda Company was founded in 1948 and its first motorcycle, the Dream, was produced a year later. Success followed success. In 1959 Honda became the leading motorcycle manufacturer in Japan. In the same year the first Honda motorcycles were sold in the United States; within two years Hondas were out-selling every other brand. The company went into the automobile business in the 1960s. Until Soichiro Honda’s death in 1992 the company continued to be the most popular motorcycle manufacturer in the world and remained high in the international rankings of leading automobile manufacturers.
