Purpose and benefits

Ray Kroc (1902–1984) was looking forward to a comfortable retirement after a successful if not earth-shattering career selling milkshake mixers. All that changed one day in 1954 when he walked into a small hamburger restaurant in San Bernardino, California. The restaurant was called McDonald’s Famous Hamburgers, and Kroc’s visit was the catalyst for a global food revolution. Kroc’s vision extended a lot further than San Bernardino. He cut himself a deal with the McDonald brothers and , drawing up a set of rules governing the operation of new McDonald’s restaurants, set about creating a franchise network. In 1961 he bought out the brothers for a bargain $2.7 million. In 1963 the company passed the one billion burger mark, opened its five hundredth restaurant number 500, and introduced its vivid mascot, Ronald McDonald.
