Purpose and benefitsOne of an elite group of US automobile industrialists, Alfred Sloan Jr (1875–1966) was both a brilliant engineer and a forward-thinking manager. After transforming the fortunes of the Hyatt Roller Bearing Company, Sloan became president of the United Motors Corporation, which soon merged with General Motors. Then, after some financial manoeuvring that ousted the founder of General Motors, William Crapo Durant, Sloan succeeded Pierre du Pont as president of General Motors in 1923. |
