Purpose and benefitsIf Eiji Toyoda hadn’t joined his family business, the Toyota name might have been associated with the textile industry rather than with automobiles. As it is, the name has become a byword for quality cars the world over.Toyoda joined the company in 1936 and was responsible for recruiting the best research engineers and organising production. Toyota’s breakthrough came when Toyoda visited Ford’s Rouge automobile plant in the 1950s. It was a revelation for him. He returned to Japan determined to combine the best of US manufacturing processes with his own innovative approach to production. The result was the Toyota Production System. The drive for quality put Toyota at the vanguard of car manufacturers. |
