Purpose and benefitsOprah Winfrey's (1954) career in broadcasting began as a teenager reading the evening news on the radio. By the age of 30 she had become the talk-show queen of the United States, hosting the nation’s number one talk-show. In 1988 she became only the third woman ever to own her own film studio, Harpo Productions. Her performance in Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of The Color Purple earned her an Oscar nomination; and at a time when talk-shows seemed to be descending into the gutter, she pulled them back out again with a move to ‘change your life’ television. Winfrey’s future seems assured: she has secured her talk-show contract until 2004, she publishes a number of magazines and produces other television programmes, and she is becoming more involved with social issues in the United States. |
